“Fire Safety for Small Boats”

             

Make Sure You Know Your Boat

  • Install a smoke detector
  • Test your smoke detector
  • Make sure furnishings (Foam) are “Fire Retardant”
  • Protect wiring to avoid chafing
  • Contain and vent all battery boxes
  • Stock all “safety matches” vibration can ignite…

Petroleum Hazards

  • If necessary to carry extra fuels, use approved containers
  • Always use a funnel when pouring
  • Make sure tanks vent directly overboard
  • Have shutoff valves on fuel lines
  • Stop the engine when refueling
  • No Smoking when refueling
  • Power OFF when refueling
  • Clean any spillage and ventilate (Blowers) after fueling

LPG (Propane) Hazards

  • Install a leak detection system
  • Always use approved piping
  • Secure cylinders properly
  • Isolate cylinders when not in use
  • Maintain adequate ventilation
  • Install a carbon monoxide detector (CO Kills)
  • Propane is heavier than air and can fill the bilge
  • “Remove these vapors to avoid a fire or explosion”

 

Firefighting Equipment

  • Install and maintain an approved fire extinguisher
  • Maintain fire extinguishers yearly
  • Keep extinguishers readily available

Class-A Fires: Ordinary Combustibles like paper or wood

 

Class-B Fires: Fires that involved flammable liquids (gasoline)

 

Class-C Fires: Fires that involve “energized” electrical

 

Class-D Fires: Fires that involve flammable metal

 

Remember!!!

In case of a fire…..
“Get Out” and “Stay Out

  • Fight the fire only if it’s safe to do so!
  • Isolate fuels and flammables
  • Avoid other craft and alert them
  • Prepare emergency grab-bag and life-raft
  • Remove non-essential crew members

Service and inspect your fire extinguisher(s) yearly!!

They can’t help you if they don’t work!!!
